Rut in February?
Here is a fun hunting fact, in my particular area of the country, the white tail deer rut doesn’t occur until late January and in some years early February! It is still deer season here until the 10th of February. I am not sure how I feel about this. Maybe I was oblivious when hunting in my younger years, but deer season has always been a pre-Christmas sort of thing for me.
In many areas of the nation, the rut occurs in November or early December at the latest. By the new year, deer season is a fond memory! January and February are the time to hole up, stay warm and get ready for spring turkey. I suppose if the hunting bug hits strong enough, you could go out in the snow and bag a few cotton tails or squirrels.
But not here, this part of the year is prime time deer season! I lamented just a few weeks ago about not having a passion and I suppose this is a case in point. As much as I love to hunt, I’ve gotten out in the woods about a dozen times so far this year and seen a few deer but wasn’t in a position to close the deal. Sitting in the tree stand in January isn’t as enjoyable as it was back in early November.
Perhaps I’ll change my paradigm next season. Maybe I won’t even hit the woods until January! It just feels weird, I’ll definitely have to overcome some deep-rooted bias. In these last few weekends, during the rut when deer traditionally lose their mind, hopefully I can get lucky. So far, this season has been better than others as I’ve seen a handful of deer come by my stand and one bobcat which was pretty cool, but it looks like the dry spell may continue.
In a few weeks deer season will be over, and it will be that February – April season where it’s time to pattern the shotgun for spring turkey and get the boat ready for fishing. As much as I love hunting in the fall and winter, I think I’m ready for some spring sports. Shivering just isn’t as fun as it used to be!
