Almost Time!
It’s almost time to hit the water! While fishing is my primary reason for getting out on the river, I learned a few years ago about the pleasure of boating. Getting to the fishing hole is half the fun! I’ve got a 1963 13-foot Boston Whaler with a 30HP, 2019 outboard hanging off the back that gets me where I need to go. Looking forward in a few weeks to zipping across the river in the old but reliable Whaler! There’s been a lot of change since she set sail on the river last year.
Now she is housed back at our home instead of an old, smelly indoor storage facility. Our new home has a bigger garage and when I tested it out in December, she was a perfect fit. More importantly, the wife didn’t mind parking her car next to the boat! As an added bonus, I’m saving $70 per month in storage fees.
Since my little fishing buddy, now a high school junior, doesn’t have as much time to go fishing with me, I spent a lot of time on the water last year going solo. With 200lbs of motor hanging off the back and my fat self, positioned close to the stern, it took a little longer for the 30hp outboard to push the boat up on plane. Over the winter I completed baseline 9.4.7.3-2 upgrades on the boat (sailors and folks in the defense industry will get that joke) by moving the cockpit eight inches forward and the battery box to the port side. A modification long overdue, the redistribution of weight should help the little boat plane out better.
Excited to make a test run around the lake in a few weeks and see how the weight redistribution helps performance. March is a bit too early, not only is the water still a tad cold for the fish to be very active, but also all the rain we’ve had in the area. One of the drawbacks of growth in our area, is all the new housing communities build their storm drains to drain out to the river. As a result, during the early spring rains, the river becomes a fast-flowing mess. Certainly, navigable by the surefooted little Whaler, but I like to play it safe and don’t want to risk catching my fairly new motor on a log! By mid to late April the water temps should be perfect and the river down enough to enjoy the moment.
I won’t catch any record fish this fishing season as usual, but I will have fun just being out on the water. It’s therapeutic to blow off some steam for a few hours each weekend. Hopefully I can get my son to join me on a few outings!
