Gift Giving

My spouse and I have unique gift giving practices. In short, we don’t. I learned early on; I am not in tune to her gift wants. Tried for a few years but saw that success was unattainable. Our workaround- every few years she treats herself to a high-end gift, jewelry, shoes or handbags. So, while there may not be numerous gifts in a given year, she gets fewer but higher quality gifts.

A bit unorthodox, but it has worked out pretty well. As for our kids, they are at the age now where money is king, and they are very content with cash, check, or gift certificates. It hasn’t always been this way; once upon a time, when much, much smaller they had HUGE Christmas mornings. We made it a practice not to give into their yearlong “I want” and go full up on Christmas. This is the way I was raised and teaches not only about the special magic of Christmas, but also about denying oneself to save for something big.

Most of our Christmas shopping is for extended family, parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. I have to admit, I kind of like it. Make no mistake, I miss the wonders of Christmas morning and seeing our kids so excited; thankfully we got plenty of pictures. It all went by too fast, but it is just the natural progression of things.

The season is ultimately not about the gifts anyway. We were given the ultimate gift a little over 2000 years ago. Easy to forget nowadays! If you do find yourself still looking for gifts, try out one of my books. They are great for those starting out on their financial journey or perhaps those who need help getting back on track.
