Giving Back
There is a certain psychology at work within financial truths. At the end of the day, the person who adheres to the truths, may build considerable wealth on paper, but could feel “poor” due to the demand to live frugally.
This can weigh heavily on one’s mind and potentially cause us to drift off course from achieving financial goals. Worse yet, we could decide the juice isn’t worth the squeeze and revolt from the truths completely. Too often folks just give up and choose to live in the moment and spend hard earned paychecks on immediate gratification.
Giving back reminds us that there are so many people in less fortunate circumstances. Many folks are literally just trying to remain alive to see the next day. At the end of the day, the average American worker with steady employment and decent health has it pretty good! Giving back will keep this important point in perspective. I believe it is an important part of wealth building.
The good news is giving back doesn’t always have to be monetary. Contributing time to community organizations, religious activities or certain causes is an effective way to give back. Donating no longer needed items is another great way to give back and help those in need. This week I want to highlight another way to give back, albeit under less fortunate circumstances, organ donation.
I never knew much about organ donation other than checking the block on my driver’s license until the past few weeks. My brother-in-law, a hardworking, 40-year-old father of three was suffering from a chronic liver condition. Identified a few years ago, over the past six months, his condition rapidly deteriorated. He had to quit work and was in constant pain. His healthcare providers began the process to place him on the organ recipient list, but it seemed to take forever.
Then just two weeks ago, his condition worsened even more, resulting in trips to the ER. Last Friday, my sister and her husband were told by the doctors that he was on the transplant list….and number one! Just a week ago this past Sunday, he was informed a donor was identified and to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. His liver transplant operation on Tuesday was an outstanding success! He already looks better and was discharged on Saturday!
Although he wasn’t with us in person during our Thanksgiving meal, it was certainly one of the best Thanksgivings ever. We were able to facetime with him in the hospital! I firmly believe if he had not received a new liver, the next few weeks might have taken a horrible turn for our family. Those gathered at the table, including his three young children, said a prayer in thanks for the organ donor and their family for giving the gift of life.
I never realized how powerful organ donation really is; it truly is life changing. It is more than just checking a block on your driver’s license application. It is giving life from loss and truly beautiful. Giving back is an important part of wealth building here on earth, and I think making the decision to be an organ donor is perhaps one of the biggest gifts we can give.
