Half Century!

Over the past year, I’ve nervously watched my high school friends announce on social media that they were turning 50. I’ve thought a few times that they were getting old and better them than me. Now I realize that this week, it’s my turn!

I’ll be turning 50 on Friday and give thanks to God for reaching this milestone. While it does sting to receive solicitations to join AARP and look at the older man staring back at me in the mirror, I know this birthday (like all of them) is a real blessing. So many friends and family I’ve known on this journey didn’t get to celebrate a half century of life.

I am not sure what I expected at turning a half century old. I’m reminded of what my parents always told me as they’ve aged. They usually say they don’t “feel” any different. I never knew what that meant as a younger person, but I think I’m starting to understand now. I truly don’t “feel” any different than I did in my 20s. Generally speaking, I’ve got the same interests, disposition, character and outlook on life that I possessed when a younger man.

But the fact is I am different. This is most noticeable at 8:30PM when I wake myself up on the couch from the sound of my own snoring! My body is changing. It lacks the strength, endurance and general usefulness it possessed even just a few years ago. Not to mention, it looks completely different! While I’m blessed with overall good health, this vessel is starting to show some mileage!

Regardless, I’m dwelling only on the goodness at turning 50 and not the drawbacks. I will take the time to pause and celebrate with family this Friday. I’ll give thanks to my Creator for the last half century and a couple of prayers for continued blessings on this wonderful journey. Turning a half century is truly a gift!
