Senior Part Deux

It’s hard to believe our youngest is a senior this year! It seems like yesterday he was heading off for his first day of kindergarten. Senior year is a pretty turbulent time. Excitement, fear and a little anger all rolled into a blur of standardized tests, college applications, proms etc.

Not sure why high school senior year is so hectic.  Perhaps it’s because we try to cram a whole lot of living in the final year of school. Maybe this just happens to every family with a senior.

At least this time around we know what to expect! We got our oldest son through his senior year with no major issues, and I expect the same with our youngest. If anything, he is better prepared to tackle the challenges of senior year better than his older brother.

He’s already checked the standardized testing block and worked on his CV for college applications which are right around the corner. We didn’t have to do as many college visits this summer as he tagged along with his older brother on a couple years ago. This will be his final year on the swim and dive team; I’ll miss the meets but not the drives!

Maybe this senior year won’t be so bad after all! There is one thing I am a little concerned about. No matter how hard one tries, it’s difficult to avoid. Of course, I’m talking about senioritis.

What is senioritis? We’ve all seen it before. I know I had a bad case my senior year. Senioritis includes such symptoms as delusions of omniscience, intermittent hearing loss, procrastinating until the very last minute, sleeping 16 hours when there is a lot to get done and a general disregard for authority.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure. Like many conditions, one can only treat the symptoms. Treatment includes near constant prodding, bribing, cajoling and the occasional threat.

Thankfully, senioritis usually ends upon the young person’s entry to the real world when they realize their status just changed to small fish in a very big pond.

We are very proud of our son; he has achieved so much in high school. This is our last hoorah for high school. A little sad, but overwhelmingly, his mom and I are very excited to see what the future holds for him!
