Spring Break

Spring Break

This week both of our sons are home for spring break. However, it appears “spring break” has all but disappeared in our family. By spring break, I mean the time-honored tradition of packing up the family wagon and going on vacation. The scary thing is, I didn’t even realize it was gone! I could place blame in several places, the generally unpredictable weather in March, work obligations or on teens who no longer enjoy mom and dad’s company, but I know fault lies squarely on me.

I had to pause to even remember the last time we took a spring break trip!  Thanks to the magic of Amazon photos, after a little research I determined it was March of 2017 since our last spring break vacation.  We drove all the way to Miami! This week’s featured pic is from a particularly blustery day in the Everglades National Park. At that time, I would have never thought it could perhaps be our last spring break vacation.

Over the years we’ve had some great spring break adventures. Sometimes it was just camping at a local campground. On a couple of occasions, we went to the beach or did something touristy, but we always did something. Now, for the past six years as it appears, I’ve been too distracted to plan anything. This year, spring break just so happens to coincide with when I am scrambling to get one of our rental properties ready to sell.

It’s good to have our kids in the house this week; they are actually helping me work to prepare the property for market. Yet, I feel like we’ve missed an opportunity. I’ve blogged previously about the importance of family vacations and balancing personal OPTEMPO. It appears I’m doing a poor job of practicing both.  I should have planned a trip, in spite of our teenagers’ strongest objections and the to-do list.

Well, no point in dwelling on the past, spring break 2023 is a wash, but I can dang sure plan for the summer! Although the absence of spring break is another reminder of the unstoppable march of time and inevitable change, I’m not ready to let go of family summer vacations yet. I think I’ll book some reservations this week!
