That Time of Year Again

Hard to believe hunting season in my state opens today! Deer, with archery equipment, to be exact. Needless to say, I won’t be hunting on a Tuesday; in fact, not sure I’ll be able to get out this coming weekend. This year’s hunting season may look a little different as there is a lot going on in our family right now. I won’t be able to get into the woods this year as much as I typically do, primarily due to some unique family commitments.

As much as I love hunting, family is first, and it’ll just have to wait until all my obligations are met. Make no mistake though, I will be in the woods!

I can’t blame what will probably be a minimalist year of hunting entirely on family obligations. Usually, I will get out in the woods up to 20 times in a season, typically on Friday, Saturday or both. While I do it with a glad heart, all those early mornings can really impact a sleep schedule! I can feel it more nowadays than when I was young, and sleep was much less important.

With some family commitments going on and a new challenging job, I’m a bit cautious to purposely upset my bio rhythms frequently this winter. Especially since I’ve been in an extended dry period when it comes to harvesting game. I’ve seen plenty of deer over the past several years, I just can’t seem to get in a position to close the deal. While for me, I just love getting out in nature, it’s still just a tad discouraging not to connect!

I guess simply put, I’ll hunt this year but expect I’ll only get out maybe a half dozen times between now and February. That’s the least I’ve hunted since being stationed overseas a decade ago!

It’s a conscious decision. I don’t want to get burnt out on a hobby I love and think this might be a good year to reevaluate my passion. Perhaps refresh some end-of-life equipment. Read up on the sport to get a new strategy. You get the idea. Sometimes we have to step back from something to remember why we loved it.

Perhaps I’ll get lucky and connect on one of my few outings. I know the law of averages are not in my favor though. While some folks can go hunt one day a year and “tag out”, that has never been me. I am a firm believer you got to get in the woods as often as possible especially when hunting public land.

I am just as excited to hunt this year, but I’m also excited to not feel the burden of knowing that I’ll be getting up in the middle of the night every weekend between now and February. 2024 has looked a lot different for our family and I guess this is just one more impacted area. Not a bad thing, just living!
