Thanksgiving 2024

This year’s Thanksgiving reflection is a departure from years past. Usually, I rant on about turkey preparation and being thankful for family. While I am still thawing a turkey and planning the family get together, this year is different. We’ve got one family member in the hospital recovering from an organ transplant. Also, less than 24 hours after the traditional Thanksgiving feast, I’ll put my wife on a plane bound for Korea to care for sick family members.

If 2024 has taught our family anything, it is the importance of giving thanks. That may seem like an odd statement given current circumstance. We have three extended family members facing serious, life threatening and life changing health issues that has resulted in family separation and a whole lot of worry. Not to mention basically reevaluating all the well laid plans in a number of areas. Simply put, all the homes, cars and wealth don’t mean much without health. I’d probably forgotten this truth; I am thankful to be reminded.

There was a lot of wonderful blessings so far in 2024 to be sure, but a lot of challenges as well. While I’ve been thankful in the face of hardship before, this year was a much-needed reminder. It really is just about being thankful for every moment. Nothing is guaranteed in this life. Rejoice for all the material blessings when the cup overflows but more importantly give thanks and cherish each moment with friends and family. We just can’t know what is right around the corner for us.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I’d be remiss if I didn’t offer a reminder that somewhere, perhaps in harm’s way, there is an American son or daughter, passing through a chow line celebrating their first Thanksgiving away from home. I am thankful for them!
