Mother’s Day

Hard to believe Mother’s Day already came and went! While I consider myself a “mama’s boy” at heart, my mom would probably disagree. For the past 30 plus years since striking out on my own and especially after trying to raise my own family, I haven’t been able to spend a lot of time with my mom. But one can’t deny their past. For a lot of reasons, I won’t get into in this blog, when I was a kid, my mom was the center of my universe. I’d like to think I’ve never forgotten that even though I don’t see her as often as I should.

It’s no secret how important mothers are. In fact, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for a mother bringing us into this world! Apparently, I’m not the only one who has trouble spending time with their mom. Some time ago, they made a day just to make people remember and hopefully visit their moms! That being said, Mother’s Day was not established in the United States as an official holiday until 1910 just a little over a hundred years ago.

This is not to suggest Mother’s weren’t appreciated before establishing an official day to recognize and honor them. But I think we can all agree it’s a good thing to have a day set aside to pause and honor the ones who brought us into this world.

While I’ve always tried to call home frequently, it just isn’t the same as visiting. Ironic and really typical of the human condition to not make time for things that matter the most. I was very happy to be able to see my mom this Mother’s Day. What made it extra special was that at least one of my kids and my wife were able to come along. As an added bonus, my sister, her husband and her kids were there to! Very rare for us to all be together, I know my mom was beyond happy.

We didn’t have a special brunch or some sort of family traditional celebration. Just did some chores around the house and talked. That is exactly what she wanted. It harkens back to a time, years ago and almost forgotten. When life seemed much slower, and the important things seemed clearer. It’s a shame we’ve lost some of that. But at least we got it back, if even for just a few hours on a beautiful Sunday in May. Belated Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!
