Summer Break

Another summer break is upon us and continuing the trend of the last few years, our family has no solid plans. I’ve lamented in previous blogs about a summer devoid of a vacation. While planning summers is certainly more complex than it used to be, it’s not impossible. There is really no one to blame but me.

Since our oldest is halfway through with college and our youngest is on short final for high school graduation, the summer just isn’t the same as it was 10, 5 or maybe even 3 years ago. This summer our oldest will work a part time job while our youngest will participate in some research internships and swim in the summer league.

Additionally, we are working off the renovations list for our new home is turning into a second job! We’ve got a lot done, but there is more to do. I hope to have most of the projects complete by the end of June. I haven’t even been able to go fishing yet!

Compounding matters, we’ve had a close family member fall ill and my wife has travelled to be with her family. It is a serious situation; we can only hope for the best.

I am not making excuses for yet another unplanned summer break. There is just a lot of life happening so far this summer. That being said, where there is a will there is a way. Perhaps we can plan a small summer adventure for later in the summer, but the rest of May and June are definitely a wash.

Even though there may be no summer plans in the works for our family, I remain thankful that we are all together this summer. This summer’s situation is yet again evidence that life tends to get more complicated as we age. I didn’t know it then, but those days in my early 30s, pushing two little guys in strollers, were the best days of my life. It was a lot easier back then.
