Spring Break 2024

As luck would have it, our kids spring breaks lined up this year. Despite their protest, we are taking a vacation! I’ve blogged previously about how spring break in recent years has become just another week in our family. No one to blame but me. I am pretty stoked that this week, we were able to pull together a trip and our family will be together, if for just a few days.

I threw this trip together at the last minute and our journey is not quite to what one typically thinks of as a spring break destination. That being said, this mini vacation has many of the typical characteristics of one of our old-fashioned spring break adventures!

We’ll drive nine hours only to stay three nights. Why only three nights you ask? See above comment about throwing this together last minute!  I really didn’t plan to take vacation time at work and didn’t plan ahead for a trip. Airfare was way too expensive! This also drove the picking of our destination, Chicago.

We went there about 16 years ago but the kids were too young to remember. It’s a neat city and while our now almost grown kids probably won’t appreciate the food and sites, me and their mom certainly will! We are hoping to get one of those before and after type pics at one of the tourist’s spots, we visited when they were in strollers.

Despite the short notice planning effort, I’m pretty proud of the arrangements I’ve made for the journey on short notice. We secured a nice hotel right in the city center, most importantly using awards and points so the outrageous Chicago parking is free! I’ve already bought our tickets for the Willis (former Sears) Tower as well as the Art Institute Museum. I’ve even got reservations at some of the best restaurants in the city for all three nights! Looking forward to seeing if the Michael Jordan Steakhouse lives up to the hype.

Now if my sons will just do their homework and watch a couple of John Hughes films before we depart, we’ll be all set!

I learned a long time ago that there is a grain of truth in the “Vacation” movies, and they actually teach a lesson; the best laid plans never pan out, what really matters is the journey. Who knows if the weather will cooperate or if all of our desired attractions will be open. What I’m looking forward to the most is taking a few days this week to reconnect with my family.
